A lovely late Victorian or Edwardian period large mahogany wood box for photographs. It has a carved top panel with the word 'Photos' set in scrolls over a stippled ground. The interior of the box is divided into three sections with the outer pair approx 13 x 25 cm and the central area 10 x 25cm.
The lid is hinged with brass fittings and the original screws. The base is plain panelled and the sides are mahogany with some nice chatoyancy. This is the first dedicated photograph storage box I have come across from the period, so it is likely quite a rare find. What a great way to house some of your favourite memories.
Condition
Top panel good with minor wear. A wood sliver lost to front right base. To the back panel there is some roughness and unusual forms in the grain along the upper section, perhaps from the surface finish getting too hot, or from old sap escaping to the surface - close up in images for you.
