  • I have been contacted by the original owner's Son and Granddaughter and they have passed along this info to me. I very much appreciate it. Robert Curran and Harold Braucht rented a little space at the Oklahoma Publishing Co in the corner of a room in 1933 with one roller press. Robert was in charge of the art & production, and Harold was the sales and promotion guy. The early posters had the art drawn on wood, for each color and the wood carved away to elevate the printing surface. They then used block letter type faces to complete the layout. As the business grew they moved into a couple of locations on their own, and purchased more presses from a firm in Chicago. Those huge presses were so loud, almost all of the printers had hearing problems later in life.
They were early users of lithography printing, making their own plates and photographic work. They pretty much stayed with entertainment printing. Circuses, and Amusement attractions. They did print a world war 2 bond poster, with the Minute Man and the Pioneer Woman statue on it. One may still be hanging in the state capital.
They did snipe printing for the Clyde Beatty Circus, and Barnum & Bailey Circus. To save the cost of shipping paper, sent the plates to a little shop they established in Lodi Ca.
During WW2, they enticed one of the Carnivals to set up in downtown Okla. City near the Civic Center to entertain the military men stations at Will Rogers, and Navy men from Norman. Later they booked Broadway show touring company's in Okla. City, bought a movie theatre

    Dear KIDROKMOD,

The unknown fighter in the at O' Grady portfolio auction is former world challenger Tony "KO King" Gardner who fought Elisha Obed for the Jr. Middleweight title. We had a long thread about Tony in the Boxrec "Boxers of the Past" section with this exact picture included. His friend and ex-cornerman posted in the thread also to corroborate. Great item and one-of-a-kind!

    - ginoh

THIS FELLA DON'T LOOK IT BUT WAS A REAL KNOCK OUT KING, CHECK OUT HIS RECORD, THERE IS ONE STRING OF 19 KNOCKOUTS
Gardner had nine one - round knockout victories and six one - round knockout losses.

As a youth, Manuel Ramos was not interested in boxing. He was a star soccer player in school. However, he was always getting into fights on the playing field, and friends suggested he should go into boxing; which he did.

When interviewed by the Ring Magazine following his victory over Ernie Terrell, Ramos refused to discuss his early career. His first 2-3 years as a professional are clouded in mystery.

Ramos put together an impressive winning streak which included a knockout over James J. Woody. Early in his career, Ramos was always in perfect condition. By 1968, he was rated 4th in the world by Ring Magazine and touted as the greatest heavyweight in Mexican boxing history.

Ramos earned a title shot against Joe Frazier after scoring an upset 10 round decision over former WBA World Heavyweight Champion Ernie Terrell. Ramos also decked Terrell, somethingMuhammad Ali had been unable to do only a year before.

Ramos went toe-to-toe with Frazier and even staggered him for a brief moment, however, Frazier came back to deck Ramos for the first time in his career and stop him in the 2nd round.

Even following his loss to Joe Frazier, Ramos was highly regarded, and a Ring Magazine story even hinted that they believed he could have won the WBA Heavyweight Elimination Tournament. However, his once promising career took a nose-dive following stunning upset losses to George Chuvalo and Chuck Wepner which ended his career as a top 10 heavyweight.

Ramos hit rock bottom when he traveled to Argentina, South America and was destroyed in one round by world rated Oscar Bonavena.

Manuel Ramos was finished as a contender by age 25, yet his name enabled him to continue to fight on for almost a decade.

Ramos was reduced to a stepping stone for title bound fighters; losing to Ron Stander and Ron Lyle to name a few.

Near the end of his boxing days, even his famous iron chin had cracked and he was knockedout by Bob Hazelton and Bernardo Mercado.

After his boxing career ended, Ramos acted in a few Mexican movies.

Ramo later developed cronic health problems which lead to his death at age 56, thus closing the book on
    Mexico's greatest heavyweight contender.

Oscar Bonavena, 33, was found shot to death at the famed Mustang Ranch bordello on May 22, 1976, in Virginia City, just outside of Reno, Nevada. A ranch security guard, Willard R. Brymer, 31, was arrested and charged with Bonavena's murder. Bonavena was shot once in the chest by a bullet from a high-powered hunting rifle. He was believed to have died instantly. Brymer served less then 10 years for Bonavena's death.

Bonvena's murder ended his colorful and controversial ring career. The Ring editor Nat Fleischer called Bonevana "The most powerful fighter I've ever seen". Ringo, as Bonavena was known to many, began his early career in New York State under the management of World War II hero and dentist,Marvin Goldberg. Among his trainers was Charley Goldman. The "Argentine Strong-Boy" racked up a quick string of early knockouts, but was overmatched early and lost by decision to highly-rated Zora Folley. After that, it was off to Argentina, where he went on another winning streak. However, the free-swinging Bonevena ran into trouble outside the ring with "off-beat" remarks, lawsuits brought about by reporters with broken cameras, and other such "colorful" events.

Bonavena defeated George Chuvalo by a majority decision in 1966. In his next fight, he became the first fighter to knock down Joe Frazier, but lost a split decision to Smokin' Joe. In 1968, he took part in the WBA's heavyweight elimination tournament, defeating Karl Mildenberger before losing a decision to Jimmy Ellis.

Shortly after he defeated Zora Folley to avenge his first pro loss, Bonavena fought a rematch with Frazier for the NYSAC heavyweight title, losing a fifteen-round unanimous decision. In 1970, he fought Muhammad Ali for the NABF heavyweight title. Ali had a very tough fight with the Argentine before stopping him in the 15th round, the only stoppage loss of Bonavena's career.

In 1972, Bonavena broke his hand in an upset loss to Floyd Patterson. He then won eleven of his next twelve, losing only to Ron Lyle. He was in the midst of a seven-fight win streak when he was shot and killed. His funeral was attended by thousands in Argentina, and his send-off was fit for royalty.
