This very early Ward Lock & Co. illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1892 and 1902/03.  These were the first of those with the copperplate script design on the cover and with the words "Shilling Pictorial Guide" at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides.  They are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps.

This particular guide dates from 1902/1903.  It is the 3rd edition of this title.  Details as follows :

Area covered :   Bath, including Wells, Glastonbury, Bradford-on-Avon and surrounding parts of Somerset.

Contents :  192 pages of text.    Fold out map (still present).   Over 50 illustrations.  90 pages of wonderful old contemporary advertisements.

Overall condition :  Very good, but slight external wear.

Maps :   Excellent.   The fold out map is present and complete.  Very little wear. No markings or damage.

Covers :    Very good.  Normal wear.  Faint superficial grubbiness, and slight fading to black design.  No other markings or damage.

Spine :   Normal wear.  Slight fading.  Small piece of cloth (1.5cm) missing at foot, and a couple of other small tears.  No other markings or damage.
