Released by Nintendo on March 9, 1996 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), this is the first RPG in the Mario series co-produced by Nintendo and Square. While using the worldview of the well-known Mario series, the game's unique scenario and design, which makes the most of the series' action game characteristics, make it a unique work both in the series and in the RPG genre. This is the first full-fledged storyline in the Mario series.
