Hittite lion column base

Width - 7 cm / 2-3/4 inches

On offer here is an exclusive scale replica of a Hittite double lion sculpture.
Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone, this statue has been given an aged slate black / grey patina.

The double lions with a short, flat raised plinth on their back were used as a decorative component when supporting a column in the palaces of the Hittites.

This leonine style was found in Tell Tayinat which is a site in Turkey about 25 km south of Antakaya / Anitioch.
Thought to be the site of Calneh in Hebrew scriptures, this site reached it's zenith in the neo-Hittite phase which commenced in the early 14th century B.C.E and ended around 1178 B.C.E.
More than one palace was discovered in Calneh and the distinctive double lions were used to symbolise the strength and power of the Hittites in a form of architectural propaganda.
