Cereus peruvianus, also known as the Peruvian apple cactus, is a columnar cactus that can grow to several meters in height. It features a bluish-green stem and can produce large white flowers that open at night.
Seed Preparation: Seeds of Cereus peruvianus should be sown in spring or early summer. Before sowing, it's advisable to soak the seeds in lukewarm water for at least 24 hours to soften the outer shell and encourage germination.
Soil: Use a well-draining cactus mix or create a blend of universal soil with added coarse sand or perlite to increase drainage.
Sowing: Scatter the seeds on the surface of the prepared soil and cover them lightly with a thin layer of sand or sifted soil. Do not bury the seeds too deep.
Moisture and Temperature: Keep the soil slightly moist but not waterlogged, covering the container with clear plastic or glass to retain moisture. Place the container in a warm location with temperatures around 20-25°C (68-77°F). Avoid direct exposure to intense sunlight which could overheat the seeds.
Germination: Seeds of Cereus peruvianus may take from one to several weeks to germinate. Once the seedlings begin to grow, gradually remove the covering to acclimate them to the outside air.
Seedling Care: When the seedlings are large enough to handle, they can be carefully transplanted into individual pots. Continue to provide indirect light, warm temperatures, and moderate watering to promote healthy growth.
Remember, cultivating cacti from seeds requires patience. Cacti grow slowly and can take several years to reach significant sizes or bloom.
