The Lives of a Cell is an essay by Lewis Thomas that focuses on how connected humanity is to nature and how we must make strides to understand our role. The phrase "lives of a cell" refers to the independent yet interrelated parts of a human cell, including mitochondria, centrioles, and basal bodies, that once led independent lives. Without these previously independent lives working together, we would not have the capacity for thought, communication, and movement.
#2 THE MEDUSA AND THE SNAIL

The Medusa and the Snail is a collection of essays by Lewis Thomas. The title essay is about the relationship between Nudibranch sea slug and the medusa of a jellyfish that inhabit the Bay of Naples. It explores how the relationship between the two creatures can be seen as illustrating the impossibility of understanding the notion of the self. The medusa-snail story is a particularly extraordinary tale of a mature jellyfish engulfing a tiny newly-hatched slug - only to be devoured bit by bit until the snail dominates and the jellyfish is reduced to a round "successfully edited parasite" affixed to the skin near the snail's mouth.
