J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973) ~ an Oxford don and author of best-selling fantasy works 

The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings.  He was also a talented artist who illustrated his own works.

The original exquisitely beautiful watercolours are now in the care of the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
