This week I'm offering a number of old non-sport cards from various vintage sets. Before the Second World War, there were two gum companies competing for dominance in the trading card business. One was the Goudey Gum company of Boston, creator of Indian Gum as well as a pretty good series of baseball sets. The other was Gum Inc. of Philadelphia., which produced such sets as Horrors of War, G-Men, the World In Arms, Uncle Sam, and the three Playball baseball sets issued from 1939 to 1941. After the war, Gum Inc. became Bowman Gum. One memorable set was War News Pictures, issued from 1939 to 1940. As its name implies, the series showed scenes from the War (which the US had not yet entered) raging in the Pacific and in Europe. These cards remain highly collectible and popular in the non-sport hobby. Here I have a nice example from this set, card #5, entitled "German Air Student." The card is in nice shape except for some surface damage (see scans). Not too bad for a card that's over eighty years old! This would be a terrific addition to any collection! Shipping is $4.00 for First Class Mail, and postage will be discounted for multiple winnings.
