German Heavy Rail Transport Wagon & Load

The rail network was a crucial part of maintaining the German war effort during WWII allowing Germany to move men and material from one front to another to bolster new offensives or shore up the crumbling defense. It was not uncommon from entire armoured divisions to be moved across Europe and railways provided the most efficient way of achieving this.

The Schwere Plattformwagen Type SSyms 80 was a flat bed rail wagon capable of transporting the 54 ton Pz Kpfw VI Tiger I Ausf E. The wagon included a ramp section  to allow the vehicle to be driven onto the wagon end-on from the railtracks rather than having to mount from a station or siding platform.

The legendary Tiger I first saw service in 1942 in North Africa and at the same time on the Russian Front. With the fearsome 88mm it became a legend amongst the enemy especially in Normandy where just about every tank sighted was thought to be a Tiger! The Tiger showed what it was capable of in 1944 in Villers Bocage when a lone Tiger in the hands of Michael Whittman virtually single-handedly stopped the British 7th Armoured Division in its tracks.
