THE BOOK
This is a new and revised edition of a work, first published in 1908, that has come to be recognized as the standard history of the exploration of North-western America. Mr. Burpee has availed himself of the results of research in the last quarter of a century to show new light upon many important incidents in the story of discovery, from the days of La Verendrye and the first expeditions inland from Hudson Bay ot comparatively recent surveys of Dominion Government officers in the far north. The fact that the original edition has been repeatedly listed in English and American rare book catalogues at $50 is a sufficient tribute to its permanent worth.
A native of Halifax, and of Loyalist or Pre-Loyalist stock on every side, Mr. Burpee comes honestly by his interest in Canadian History. While he has given particular attention to the early period of Western Canadian history, in The Search for the Western Sea, and in a number of other books dealing with the discoveries of La Verendrye and other explorers, he has also made contributions to Canadian history of a more general character.
The breadth of his interest is illustrated by the positions he has occupied. Officially he has been for nearly a quarter of a century the Secretary for Canada of the International Joint Commission. He organized and was for some years President of the Canadian Historical Association. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Geographical Society, and its Journal. He is Acting President of the royal Society of Canada, the senior learned society of the Dominion. He has also been National President of the Canadian Authors Association.
He is a fellow or member of a number of societies at home and a broad, and holds medals of the royal Society of Canada and of he French Academy for outstanding work in Canadian historical research.
