I have here for sale 2 volumes of ARTISTIC JAPAN Illustrations and Essays, collected by S Bing.  Published by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London in 1890.  I have Vols III and IV which are bound up volumes of the numbered issues published monthly between May 1889 and May 1890. Vol III contains issues 13-18 and Vol IV contains issues 19-24.  Each issue has a number of essays on Japanese art and a number of colour and b/w plates.  There are about 9-10 plates per issue and they are a mixture of b/w, 2-colour and full colour.  Vol III has 57 plates in total and Vol IV has 56.  In addition to those there are also 6 colour front covers from the original individual issues bound in the back of each volume, so if you include these in the tally, there are a total of 125 plates.

Bound in half navy cloth on colour illustrated hardboards.  Black title lettering in a cream block to the top left corner of the front boards.  Gilt title lettering to the spines.  Chipped to heads and tail of the spines and minor wear to corners.  Otherwise the boards are in very good condition.  Olive endpapers with ownership bookplate.  Spots to the front endpaper of Vol III.  Pages a bit sunned but clean.  Binding tight.  Vol III - 87 pages of text plus the plates, Vol IV - 83 pages of text plus the plates.  33 x 25 cm.
