I have here for sale a book entitled THE HAREM, The: An Account of the Institution as it Existed in the Palace of the Turkish Sultans by N. M. Penzer. This is the first edition of this book of an emblem Turkish history, which was published by George G. Harrap & Co.  in 1936. It includes 43 photographic and artistic illustrations, depicting the establishments in question.

The merit of Penzer's book, which was originally published a bare quarter of a century after the Turkish harem came to an ignominious end, is that without minimising the sensational and unpleasant aspects of the system he presents an authoritative, objective account of its history over a period of 450 years.

Black hardboards, with gilt illustration to front board. Front board has very slight stains to the edges, and a deep scrape to center. Spine with gilt title lettering, which is bumped to top and tail. Bindings firm, and pages and plates are very clean. Overall condition: Very Good. 277 pages. 25 cm x 18 cm.
