Baghdad: Surveys Press, 1953, FIRST Edition.
Originally published in Arabic in 1952, this is the 1st English language edition, dated July 1953.
Original colour pictorial wraps, good, tanned, rubbed and worn with marks and folding where it hasn’t been stored flat.
Ahmed Sousa was Director-General of Surveys, and a member of the Iraqi Academy. This Atlas, the first of its kind, was 2 years in the making. It contains a general map of Iraq showing administrative boundaries; maps of 14 Liwas, with several additional maps for Baghdad Liwa containing detailed information on Baghdad City; the boundaries of 3 desert areas (Northern, Southern, the Desert between the Euphrates and the Tigris); Iraqi Tribes with Guide Index of tribal names; and main roads.
These are accompanied by tables of areas and populations for every Liwa, Qadha and Nahiya, drawing on 1947 Census data, a special index of cities and towns, an index of Qadhas and Nahiyas, with glossary, and notes on transliteration of the Arabic. Rare in commerce.
Pagination: (3), 40pp including 25 pages of attractively drawn and detailed colour maps.
Provenance – no inscriptions or bookplates.
Approximately 13 ¼ inches tall by 9 ¾ inches wide (25 x 35cm).
