THE FIRE: On the evening of Sunday, August 11, 1941, (at 8:30PM) The Bickel Barn and many outbuildings and hay piles, caught fire and were destroyed. This fire was captured here by an amateur Flint, MI photographer, who happened to be in Vassar at the time. He stuck this and other photos in an album, along with a narrative of the scene.

FARM HISTORY: Ludwig and Emma Bickel first began farming his own land in April 1911. Originally from Frankenmuth, he purchased a preexisting farm in Tuscola Township from Adelaide Taylor. On June 1, 1912, just 14 months later, Ludwig married his sweetheart, Emma Whit. They had two sons, Elmer and Alwin. Elmer later became a high school teacher in Saginaw and taught German, Latin, and English language classes.

Alwin stayed home to work on the farm after completing eighth grade. At that time, the farm consisted of horses, dairy cattle, and chickens. Alwin Bickel took over the family farm in 1941 and purchased his first tractor, a Farmall H six-cylinder, two-plow row-crop tractor. He married Arlene Auernhammer on February 20, 1944, and the couple had three children— Lloyd, Ronald, and Marilyn.
