Description:

In Vinegia: appresso Giovanni Varisco & i compagni, 1569, Second Edition.

Full leather binding with gilt titles to a red leather label to the spine, pages with ink marginalia throughout.

Four volumes bound as one, amended and corrected 1569 (dated foreword by editor Thomaso Porcacchi).

Title page with publisher's engraved crest, 38 woodcut plates / engraved illustrations after Giovanni Antonio Dosio (architect and sculptor 1533-1609, b. San Gimignano) and a fold out map of Rome. The fold out map with closed tears (no loss) to the folds, creased to the join with the text block.

Four books in one: Libro Primo pp.1-58, Libro Secondo pp.59-97, Libro Terzo pp.98-176, Libro Quarto pp.177-201.

Four page Introduction by Thomaso Porcacchi (1530-1576), highly regarded 16th century author and cartographer – although Porcacchi made many amendments and corrections to Gamucci's second edition, he is very polite in his praise of Gamucci's "intelligence, effort and industry".

Six page address by Bernardo Gamucci in praise of Don Francesco de Medici, Prince of Florence and Siena; two page note to the readers by publisher Giovanni Varisco, and poetry quotes at the beginning from contemporary 16th century writers including M. Benedetto Varchi, Madonna Laura Battiferra and M. Gherardo Spini.

An attractive and well-preserved copy.
