1613 Copernicus ASTRONOMY 1ed
Ridley Magnetical Bodies & Motions MAPS Gilbert
Mark Ridley was a 16th-century English physician who is best
remembered for his studies in magnetics. He worked closely with William Gilbert
on magnet sciences and his book ‘De
Magnete’ in 1600. A few years later, Ridley published a work describing his
and Gilbert’s findings – a work that promoted Gilbert’s ideas and theories of
magnetism. “Magnetical Bodies and Motions”
was first published in 1613 and helped English readers understand Copernican
astronomy in addition to commentary on Gilbert. Notable topics include:
·
movement of the
earth
·
cosmological
theories
·
magnetism as the
soul of the earth
·
astronomical and
magnetism instruments and their uses in navigation
·
maps – New England,
Virginia, and Terra Australis
This exquisite 1613 first edition of Ridley’s “Magnetical Bodies” includes 21
impressive illustrations including the highly coveted “Terra Australis”
engraving of a southern hemisphere continent. This particular issue is exceedingly
rare as it includes the ‘Tixover advertisement’ on the final page of text,
where others conclude simply with ‘FINIS’.
