BRUSHER MILLS (1838-1905) THE FAMOUS NEW FOREST SNAKE CATCHER, lived in a "Clotten Hut" in Gritnam Wood, sold snakes to The London Zoo and produced an ointment containing adder fat. His name is thought to derive from his job of sweeping Lyndhurst Cricket Pitch or the frozen Foxlease Pond. Buried in St Nicholas's Churchyard, Brockenhurst, he died of a broken heart after he was refused the land rights to his forest home.
