PORTUGAL Pedro IV & Maria II the Medal  (# 1 )  of Freedom Campaigns 1826-1834

Choice AU. 30.2mm. 17.90gm

This medal commemorates these two events and lists the two monarchs who “fought” for freedom (understood as the triumph of Liberalism over Absolutism). The effigies of the sovereigns appear on the obverse of the medal, while on the reverse, the epigraph “Campaigns for Freedom | 1826-1834”.

The medal, with a small upper support for placing a ribbon, was created in 1861 by the Secretary of State for War Affairs and was intended to honor all those who had distinguished themselves in the service of liberal ideology during the struggles of the 20s and 30s of the 19th century. It was another of the many ways that the liberal government found to celebrate the great successes seen between 1820 (date of the revolution that paved the way for the return of the Brazilian court) and 1834 (year of the definitive victory of the liberals over the absolutists). In the center of the field on the reverse, the number 1 is displayed, which indicates that the recipient of this medal (whose identity is unknown) served the cause for 1 year.
