Offered
at auction, a group of 5 Fine Antique Microscope Slides. Each is a mount of
Diatoms sourced from a specific location, mostly mid 19th C. villages
and towns in SE England. They were made by noted early English Naturalist Henry
Deane during the period from 1848 to 1855. Deane is best known for his 1845
discovery of the remains of organic life forms Xanthidia and Polythalamia in the
Folkstone Chalks.
This group includes Diatoms from... Dolgelly Mill Stream, Stoke Hill, Chelsea, Snowden, & Sidmouth
These
Diatom mounts are from a large collection of his slides, a number of which were
signed and dated, confirming their maker and period. On some slides (locations)
a few Diatom species predominate, while others have a wide variety of different
species on a single slide.
The
slides are in good condition, some with chamfered and polished edges, all with
diamond engraved specimen details in Deane’s hand. There are additional small, modern
printed labels on the rear of each slide, restating the engraved details.
All auction images were taken from the actual slides using various
methods and techniques appropriate to the specimen. These include Brightfield,
Darkfield, Oblique, Crossed Polarizing Filters (Polariscope) with and without
Selenites, Phase Contrast, DIC, etc.
