Majdanek, the local name for the area occupied by the concentration camp in Lublin and known before the camp's foundation, was coined by Lublin inhabitant in 1941 and derived from the neighboring districted of the town called Majdan Tatarski. It rapidly spread amongst prisoners, becoming a synonym for the martydom and heroism of the victims of the Nazi regime.
