I have here for sale a 4-volume set of PRINCIPLES OF GEOLOGY by Charles Lyell.  It is a fourth edition of this classic work, published in 1835 by John Murray.  There are a total of 15 plates/maps across the 4 volumes (all checked and present).

Sir Charles Lyell(1797-1875) was a Scottish geologist who demonstrated the power of known natural causes in explaining the earth's history. He is best known today for his association with Charles Darwin and as the author of Principles of Geology (1830–33), which presented to a wide public audience the idea that the earth was shaped by the same natural processes still in operation today, operating at similar intensities. The philosopher William Whewell dubbed this gradualistic view "uniformitarianism" and contrasted it with catastrophism, which had been championed by Georges Cuvier and was better accepted in Europe.  The combination of evidence and eloquence in Principles convinced a wide range of readers of the significance of "deep time" for understanding the earth and environment.

Bound in half black leather on blue marbled hardboards.  Gilt patterned bands, brown leather title and volume blocks and gilt lettering to the spines.  All 4 volumes are rubbed to head and tail, to board edges, corners and to the marbled paper.  All boards firm though.  The title page on Vol I is detached.  There is some random foxing here and there across the 4 volumes but mostly clear.  Binding firm.  Vol I - 406 pages, Vol II - 465 pages, Vol III - 455 pages, Vol IV - 456 pages.  19 x 11 cm.
