I have here for sale a folio size book entitled THE SECOND VOLUME OF THE GARDENERS DICTIONARY by Philip Miller.  First edition published by Charles Rivington, London in 1739.  The preface has an illustrated chapter header, capital and tail piece, as does the first page of text.  Laid out alphabetically in double column format.  Three fold-out plates illustrating stoves and parts thereof, at the appropriate point under S and then there are 4 further plates of plants at the end of the Addenda section.  Index has an illustrated chapter header too.  Philip Miller FRS (1691 – 18 December 1771) was an English botanist and gardener of Scottish descent. Miller was chief gardener at the Chelsea Physic Garden for nearly 50 years from 1722, and was best known for writing this highly popular Gardeners Dictionary.

Full leather hardboards with 6 gilt raised bands, a light red leather title block and gilt lettering.  Small split in the leather at the base of the front hinge.  A little bit of wear to the corners and a couple of bobbles in the leather to the bottom right corner of the front board.  A few scratches to the rear board.  Some crinkling to the pages and a few small stains.  Repairs to the fold-out plates.  Overall very clean and tightly bound.  Unpaginated.  36 x 23 cm.
