Pastures New by Ian Niall

Hardcover book published by William Heinemann Ltd 1952, 116 pages with black and white illustrations.

Ian Niall (1916 – 2002), born John Kincaid McNeillie, was a writer from Galloway, Scotland. He wrote works under both these names. He was born in Old Kilpatrick, to parents from the Machars in South West Scotland. He moved back to Galloway at 18 months old, and the area formed a basis for his early fiction. Pastures New is the story of fields the author has known and loved—the story of the stream that flows through them, of the wild things that live by the water and among the stone heaps. Across these familiar fields he watched the water rail sliding through the rushes, and came to know every gorse hill, every sheltered bank or weed-choked corner. To read this book is to stand in the rickyard when the owl is flying soft-winged among the thatch. In these pastures the author ploughed, and worked at many a harvest. The story is of the sun across the bog field with the breeze swaying the mauve-blossomed potatoes; the story of spring and the plover’s cry.
