Coloured frontispiece (signed CE Brock 1908). Translated from German by L Hall. Some religious poems and prose precede the stories.

Fine simple binding of a very scarce volume, signed by the binder in gilt to the rear board (EJG) with the date 1908.

Very elegant binding, most likely by Edith J Gedye, a woman book binder who exhibited her work at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society (A&CES) Exhibition in 1903 and 1906 (page 29 of "Women Bookbinders 1880-1920" by Marianne Tidcombe) and worked with Miss M Marshall (taught either by Cockerell or Sangorski and Sutcliffe) who worked out of Bloomsbury Square and exhibited together.

"Edith Gedye (often mispelt Gedge) went on to establish her own workshop at Gaunt House, Orchard Street, Bristol. Some of her bindings of about 1915 are very prrofessional, suggesting she may have employed a trade binder" (page 171-173 and fig 130 of of "Women Bookbinders 1880-1920" by Marianne Tidcombe).

This is an earlier piece - almost unndoubtedly by Gedye. There is one volume bound by Gedye, held at the Victoria and Alber Museum and we have written to them to verify this information and see if their copy has the same binder's mark (today 15 July 2020).

• Spine – good condition – gilt titles, 5 raised bands, 6 compartments with gilt decoration.
• Joints – good condition – sound.
• Corners – good condition – gently bumped.
• Boards – good condition – bound by GEJ 1908, half leather with gilt decorations down the spine edge, some gentle attractive fading to the leather, the binders initials and date in gilt to the rear board.
• Page edges – good condition – all gilt.

Internally

• Hinges – good condition – intact.
• Paste downs – good condition – plain dark green
• End papers – good condition – plain dark green.
• Title – good condition – lightly tanned.
• Pages – good condition – coloured frontispiece by C. Brock, lightly tanned with minor foxing throughout.
