Description

Here's another auction by

Lone Star Trains and Collectibles,

Your Classic Era Train Headquarters!
NOT ONE YOU SEE FOR SALE VERY OFTEN!
SCARCE VERSION.

Here is a Lionel #116 ballast hopper from 1910-1926. It is really a manually operating short hopper with a lever that releases the ballast out the chute on the bottom. This car is one of the more unusual ones from the era--something not made postwar.

These look great in a long line--a ballast train--on the layout!!!

Did you know that there are four primary versions of this car (and of course, many more within that).

THIS car is Type 4, variation C in the Greenberg classifications.
That means:

  • Is the DARK GREEN body version
  • Has GOLD PRINT
  • Has the top edge rolled in a "teardrop rim" with
  • Red paint on top rim
  • Red paint on handle (still visible)
  • Lionel Corp era
  • TYPE 3 DATA LINES:
    • Has CAPACITY 50000 LBS on the left (versus 80000 LBS)
    • Has WEIGHT 30000 LBS on the right (versus 35000 on some versions)
Do you have this version? Be sure you have them all!

Sure to be an attention-getter in the prewar collection.

CONDTION: C-6+. The patina on the dark green paint is surprisingly strong. Some scratches as you can see, but not too many.
Good gold printing; all is legible and nice. Some factory paint runs as you find on this era (these cars were usually dipped). Complete couplers, trucks, and wheels, all of which are clean. Pictures show it all and are enlargeable.
