I have here for sale a RARE book entitled DIARY OF A JOURNEY THROUGH MONGOLIA AND TIBET IN 1891 and 1892 by William Woodville Rockhill.  It was published by the Smithsonian Institution, Washington in 1894.  The author travelled through Peking, Mongolia, Kumbum, Salar Pa-Kun, Kuei-Te, Koro Nor, Ts'Aidam, Naichi Gol, Namru De, Ch'amdo, Draya, Mar-K'Ams, Bat'ang, Lit'ang and Chala.  There are 5 appendices covering the Salar Vocabulary; San-Ch'Uan T'u-Jen vocabulary; Plants of Tibet; Table of Latitudes, Altitudes, etc; and Mean Monthly Temperature.  There are 27 b/w plates (there should also be a Route Map at the rear but this is missing).  13 in-text illustrations too.

William Woodville Rockhill (May 1, 1854 – December 8, 1914) was a United States diplomat, best known as the author of the U.S.'s Open Door Policy for China, the first American to learn to speak Tibetan, and one of the West's leading experts on the modern political history of China.

Lovely binding by Sam Ying in Hong Kong.  Half maroon leather on maroon hardboards.  4 gilt raised bands to the spine and gilt title lettering.  The book is in fine condition inside and out.  413 pages, 24 x 15 cm.
