I have here for sale a scarce book entitled THE RUPERT STORY BOOK by MARY TOURTEL published by Sampson Low, Marston & Co., Ltd., London, undated, but online research indicates 1938.  This is the First edition.  This story book includes 7 stories featuring Rupert and his friends, together with pictures to colour, and cut out and colour.  There is a full-page colour illustration on the frontispiece and two-tone text illustrations throughout.

Rupert Bear, the children's comic strip character and franchise, was created by artist Mary Tourtel and first appeared in the Daily Express newspaper on 8 November 1920.  Rupert's initial purpose was to win sales from rival newspapers.  In 1935 the stories were taken over by Alfred Bestall, previously an illustrator from "Punch".  More recently various other artists and writers have continued the series.  The comic strip is published daily in the Daily Express with many of the stories later being printed in books, and every year since 1936 a Rupert annual has also been released.

Colour illustrated hardboards and spine, with a clear plastic wrapper.  Minor wear on some of the edges of the boards.  Small crack down the spine with some bumping to the top and bottom.  Neat colouring in crayon on the first picture to colour page but none elsewhere.  Browning and light foxing to pages.  All pages are firm and the book is in very good condition. 'Belongs to' box is not filled in.  Unpaginated.  25.5 x 19.5 cm.
