The book itself is an epic story of revenge and redemption. It follows a man named Edmond Dantès who faces many hardships. He goes from being a sailor to becoming the powerful Count of Monte Cristo. His journey mirrors the ups and downs we all face in life. For a short time, The Count of Monte Cristo was banned along with the other books of Alexandre Dumas by the Catholic Church. Although no reason is given for the prohibition, it is possible that the hint at homosexuality in the original French version may have been the cause. If you celebrate the freedom to read, this is a novel you want in your library.
