Description:
London: Printed at the Oriental Press by Wilson and Co., for Edward Harding, 1801, First Edition in two volumes.
First Edition in two volumes, complete.
Full leather bindings with repaired spines and new spine labels. Spine joints repaired with the old spines laid on and new leather labels.
With the correct plate count, but with a portrait of Willm. Harvey at Pg. 5 in Vol 2 (not listed on the plate list), substituting the plate of William Chillingworth, which was not ready for publication. Later copies would have both plates, or just the Chillingworth plate. Hand-coloured folding maps.
This extensive journey was taken by Thomas Pennant and his son at a leisurely pace and with some anxiety due to long absence from his family. His account written late in life and offered for publication by his son after his death, is short on personal anecdote, but full of topographical and historical detail, intended as it was to be a survey of the "comparison of the naval strength and commercial advantages and disadvantages of our island with those of her two powerful rivals".
Pennant's son David was just about to make a journey to France and Spain and his father wanted him to be well informed. The work was part of a much larger project by Pennant, referred to as his 'Outlines of the Globe' in the Editor's Preface.
Vol I – xxx, 306pp;
Vol II – 324, [14]pp.
PENNANT, naturalist, antiquary, traveller, whose accounts of his journeys in Scotland, to London, and especially in North Wales, are among his best literary works.
Provenance: bookplate for Matthew Wilson to the front of both volumes.
Approximately 12 inches tall.
