I have here for sale a book entitled DOCTOR SYNTAX IN PARIS by William Combe.  First edition published in 1820 by W Wright.  No title page so publication details taken from online research.  There are only 4 full page colour plates by Charles Williams, chief caricaturist for the printseller Fores, and they are fully as irreverent as the Rowlandson (and Gillray) plates which were his inspiration, and all the more so for their Gallic setting.  This book, which is part of a series of Doctor Syntax books, were Combe's gentle parody of the 'picturesque' tour books of William Gilpin.

Half brown leather on brown marbled hardboards.  Gilt bands, motifs and lettering to the spine.  Chipped to head and tail.  Front board detached.  Wear to corners.  Brown marbled endpapers.  Title page missing but poem complete.  Pages very clean and firm.  318 pages, 23 x 15 cm.
