This is for a 16x20 Canvas Print of the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan.

The Strait of Mackinac is a 3.5 mile strip of water that separates the Upper and Lower Peninsula of Michigan.

The early envisioning of the building of this bridge was in the 1880s. Cornelius Vanderbilt II proposed plans for the bridge as well.

The engineering feat was seemingly impossible at first, with a 295 ft depth needing to be accounted for. The strait made it very slow and hard to travel between northern and south Michigan.

Before the Bridge was a ferry service that transported people and vehicles across the water. Having a bridge would significantly expand commerce in the area, and extend the tourist season much later into the year.

Attempts to build this were delayed by 70 years due to the estimated expense and World War 2. The estimated expense to build it in 1928 was $330 Million (in today’s money). It wasn’t until after WW2, and the traffic waiting for the ferry service was backed up for 5 hours on a regular basis, did construction plans really kick into gear.

Various attempts to raise money through government bonds in early 1951 failed.

It wasn’t until 1953 that the engineer David Steinman from New York finally got a design approved and they broke ground. It ended up costing $750 million in today’s money!

Its opening completely transformed Michigan’s economy for those who lived on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and culturally connected 2 pieces of the state that prior to its building had been hard to travel between.

To this day it is still one of the longest bridges on earth and its size and majesty is world-renowned.
