This medal was struck to celebrate the return of Napoleon's ashes, under the reign of King Louis-Philippe in 1840

DE LA RESTAURATION ET DE LA MON(ARCHIE) DE 1830 Rev/ A Lady (France) standing right and holding Palms of Victory is welcoming the late Emperor back to France, behind her an Angel. We can see Napoleon's shell, carried by King Louis-Philippe climbing the stairs on the first ground. The Emperor is going to be honoured by France. On the right background, there is the ship which brought him back to His Country, and on the left background we can see the &quotInvalides Building" (where the famous French Soldiers are buried, in memory and honour from the Nation, and where the Napoleon's Memorial takes place). Above, in the Sky, Napoleon is sitting down on a Phoenix rising from a shinning Sun, and he salutes his people


signed : Montagny fecit . Jean-Pierre Montagny (1789-1862) was a famous engraver. He was the son of Clement Montagny. Already under the French Restauration (after Napoleon the Great) he engraved many dies for coins and medals, as well during the French Revolution in 1848, for these ones he took his inspiration in many medals engraved during the Revolution of 1789.
