GORGEOUS TRIBAL TEXTILE

This beautifully executed vintage traditional tribal Ikat Selendang/Scarf is from the Biboki Kingdom of West Timor.

The word "ikat" literally means "to tie".  The pattern has been tie-dyed into the threads before they are woven together!  If you look at the close up shots you can see how precisely the threads have been tied to produce a clear, crisp ikat.  This is a three color ikat which means that this has been done twice to produce three colors before the threads went onto the loom.

The hand spun cotton is fine with a tight twist, making for a soft, tough serviceable textile.
