original 8 page  booklet Four Letters of Alexis St. Martin published in 1937 by the William L Clements Library in Ann Arbor. Alexis St. Martin was shot in the stomach in 1822 and treated by a Dr Beaumont and lived. However the wound never sealed over leaving a small hole into his stomach that the Dr used to investigate how the stomach and digestion really functioned when no scientific knowledge existed. Martin lived to long life, dying in 1880. Booklet is one of a 1000 copies printed in 1937.   Booklet measures 5&3/8" x8& 1/4". In very good condition with an old fold line down the pages.
