I have here for sale a finely bound complete 12-volume set of DELLE OPERE DI TORQUATO TASSO con le Controversie sopra La Gerusalemme Liberata.  Published between 1735 and 1740 by Steffano Monti in Venice.  Illustrated capitals throughout and vignettes to the title pages.  Torquato Tasso (11 March 1544 – 25 April 1595) was an Italian poet of the 16th century, known for his 1591 poem Gerusalemme liberata (Jerusalem Delivered), in which he depicts a highly imaginative version of the combats between Christians and Muslims at the end of the First Crusade, during the Siege of Jerusalem of 1099.

All bound in full calf leather with 5 raised bands to each spine and with stamped gilt title and volume number.  

Vol I has a beautiful illustrated frontispiece (see photos) and one loose page.  A stain to the first few pages, otherwise clean and firm. Boards in fine condition.  603 pages. - 1735

Vol II has staining to the top right corner of all the pages to a greater or lesser degree, worst on the first 100 pages or so. Last couple of pages are missing the text across the top sixth and have been repaired with plain paper. Binding firm and boards in very good condition.  560 pages.

Vol III half the title page is missing and has been repaired with plain paper.  Damp staining at intervals, but worse on the first 100 pages.  Dark marks to the fore edges of the boards.  Binding firm and boards otherwise in very good condition.  482 pages.

Vol IV covers La Gerusalemme Conquistata.  Title page and all others clean, boards in fine condition.  492 pages plus index.  

Vol V very light damp staining to the centre of the book, but generally pretty clean pages.  Boards in fine condition.  524 pages. - 1735

Vol VI boards in very good condition.  Light damp staining to bottom edge of a lot of the pages, but all text readable and pages firmly bound.  531 pages. - 1736

Vol VII has slight wear to the bottom left hand corner of the front board, but otherwise boards in very good condition.  Pages clean and firm, apart from last 50 pages or so where there is a small light stain to the bottom right hand corner of the page.  536 pages. - 1737

Vol VIII is in fine condition, inside and out.  534 pages.

Vol IX has small part of the title page missing which has been repaired with plain cream paper.  Spine leather chipped at the base of the spine and slight rubbing to the head.  Pages show signs of damp staining throughout and pages a bit rippled.  548 pages.

Vol X boards in fine condition, just a small tear to the base of the rear board.  The pages are a little rippled but no evidence of damp staining, just a couple of marks here and there.  540 pages.

Vol XI boards in fine condition and small damp mark to the top right corner of the last 100 pages or so.  Binding firm.  532 pages.

Vol XII boards darkened across the bottom quarter, in very good condition otherwise.  About half the title page is missing and has been repaired with plain cream paper.  Damp staining at intervals throughout, some mild, some more marked especially towards the back and half the last page has been reinforced with plain paper.  424 pages.  

All volumes measure 27 x 13 cm.
