From Annie Proulx, up for auction is an
indicated fourth printing of the true First American Edition of her Pulitzer
Prize winning novel The Shipping News as well as a first printing of Close
Range: Wyoming Stories.
The Shipping News (NY, Scribner’s Sons,
1993) – with 4 in its print run, this is a fourth printing of the true First
Edition the author's 2nd novel, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and The National
Book Award as well as basis of the film.
The book is in near fine condition.
Binding is square and firm though not quite as tight as a finer
copy. Exterior is near flawless with no
damage to boards and clean page ends. Interior contents are fine with no names, no errant
marks and no torn pages. Sans brodart cover, the dust jacket is in near fine
condition, priced $20.00 like the first print, with no tears or chips, lighy rubbing and a few
dimples to rear upper panel. Front panel bears a peel off National Book Award
winner sticker issued before the more common Pulitzer sticker. Rear panel also has seven reviews (Chicago
Tribune, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Booklist, Providence
Journal-Bulletin, Vermont Sunday Magazine, and The Washington Times) again like
the first state dust jacket.
Close Range: Wyoming Stories (NY,
Scribner's Sons, 1999) - including the story Brokeback Mountain, basis of the
film, with 1 in its print run, a first printing in fine condition – with one tiny
exception - binding is very tight and straight but top edge of front board has
a small dent – see pic. Otherwise, exterior
is nice with clean page ends. With full page watercolor plates by William
Matthews, interior contents are fine with no names or errant marks other than a
penciled 1st Ed 1st Print and price to FFEP. In a brodart cover, the dust jacket is priced
and in near fine condition with no chips or tears but some light soiling and
thin wrinkle to rear panel.
