The United States Navy commissioned the Eames' to provide them with 5000 of these leg splints after their design was found to be a much better splinting solution compared to the Navy's previous metal splints. It was with the money from that initial order that the Eames' went on to found their legendary design studio. Evans Manufacturing was also the manufacturer the Eames made some of their earliest chair designs with before the company urged them to find a company more experienced with furniture (Herman Miller).
