Up for sale is a 1982 D Copper circulated Lincoln Cent, made during the 1982 transition year when the mint began to change the make-up of the penny to zinc from copper to save money, since the cost of copper was increasing. The copper penny was made of 95% copper plus 5% tin and zinc. This penny weighs 3.1 grams. The new copper plated zinc penny weighs 2.5 grams. Both kinds of pennies were minted in 1982. The difference in weight is the best way to tell them apart.
