I don't know what this is made of.

However, if I were to guess, I would guess that this is not original (the scrimshaw), but possibly a reproduction on a piece of real old piece of ...  something.

Some similar looking scrimshaws have claim the material to be fossil mastodon.  One said ancient walrus tooth ivory. 

I do not know what it is.  I can't tell what it is, but the back looks like a rock, or a fossilized something.

I'm selling it as-is.

You may have something real old, or something new.

Got it from an estate auction.
