Mrs. Judith French. Mrs. Judith French, widow of John W. French, died at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. W. T. Dabney, in this city, December 13, 1904. Mr. French was born in Cumberland county on the 20th of March 1823. She was the daughter of Rebecca Walker and Lindsay Blanton, and granddaughter of Captain William Walker, of Revolutionary fame. She joined the Methodist Church when seventeen years of age, and taught Suinday school for thirty-seven years, until fifteen years ago, when ill health confined her to the house. She is credited with being the first teacher of an infants' class in this city. Be her request, eight of these scholars, now men from thirty-two to forty years old, were pall-bearers-Messrs. T. D. Newell, Minetree and E. C. Folkes, Harvey Davie, O. H. Gates, Joseph Montgomery, W. H. Tyree and Dudley Barnette. Hers was a lovely Christian character, always bright and cheerful, though suffering untold pain. Mrs. French is survived by one daughter, Mrs. W. T. Dabney, and four sons-William L., F. A., John B., of this city and Dr. J. A. French, of Austin, Texas- a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; also a sister, Mrs. R. T. Jeter, of Amelia county. The services were conducted by Revs. C. H. Boggs, Mastin and Peters. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. After a well spent life she has gone to her reward; her good works will live after her. from "The Times-Dispatch," Richmond, Va., Wednesday, December 21, 1904 issue, p. 12, c. 6.
