Japanese Kutani Porcelain Bucket

A porcelain bucket of Kutani origin in the shape of a traditional Japanese well bucket (ido baketsu) or water bucket (mizu baketsu).  It would have been intended as a vase, although buckets of this form were sometimes used on the altar at New Year.  Full sized wooden examples were also used for uchimizu in the summer.

The item is decorated in traditional style with two bijin and an exotic bird to the opposing side.  It has distinctive use of bright lemon yellow accents.  The base is marked in script translating simply as 'Kutani'.  It dates to the Meiji period c1900.

Condition

Minor wear with some small losses of decoration (white patches in the red ground).  A few production flaws including drips in the glaze and firing cracks around the handle spar joint.
