For purchase is a Build A Road BR-1 kit for Matchbox models.  This is from Lesney Products and dates to 1967.  It has 45 gray plastic pieces including one long rope type piece.  There are 10 yellow capped street lights and 28 small road signs.  Plus the instruction sheet and original box.  All items are in great condition.  The box has some old tape on two corners and a tear from tape in the center opening.  

You can build and design a variety of Matchbox roadways.  No glue necessary and all parts snap together.
