“Calm as the Night” (Still wie die Nacht) is a perfect example of German lieder music (also known as art songs) that is a mainstay of most every singer’s repertoire. Lied (plural Leider) is a German song that sets poetry to music, performed by a single vocalist and piano. The most famous composers of Lieder were Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss. In German culture the Lied as an art song goes back to the Middle Ages. Carl Bohm (aka Henry Cooper [pseudonym] and Karl Bohm) was a German pianist and composer. He is regarded as one of the leading German songwriters of the 19th century, and wrote such works as Calm as the Night (Still wie die Nacht), Twilight, May Bells, Enfant Cheri and The Fountain. Bohm composed music in many genres.

 

Nathan Haskell Dole was an American editor, translator, and author. A writer and journalist in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston, he translated many of the works of Leo Tolstoy and books of other Russians; novels off the Spaniard Armando Palacio Valdés; a variety of works from the French and Italian; and evidently some German songs.

 

G. Schirmer, Inc. is an American classical music publishing company based in New York City, founded in 1861 by German-born Gustav Schirmer Sr. The oldest active music publisher in the U.S., Schirmer publishes sheet music and represents some well-known European music publishers in North America. The Schirmer family owned the company for over 100 years until Macmillan, a major book publisher, purchased it in 1968. Macmillan then sold G. Schirmer to its current owner, Robert Wise, in 1986, the owner of popular music publisher, Music Sales Group, Inc. The Music Sales Group changed its name to Wise Music Group in February 2020.
