The magic combination of John Buscema pencils and Alfredo Alcala inks for the black and white “mature format” tales of the conquering Cimmerian took a generation’s breath away.

Four years after the successful launch of the four-colour comic, the 84-page Savage Sword of Conan was a logical extension and another huge leap forward for US comics in general and Marvel in particular. It led to Buscema rivalling Barry Windsor-Smith as the supreme Conan artist and, when Big John saw the sales figures, his demand of a rise in page rate! A range of artists followed, but none matched the sheer power and majesty of Buscema and Alcala, who together and separately drew the bulk of Roy Thomas’s scripts for the first 100+ issues of this 1974 to 1995 title.
