WHO WE ARE, HOW WE DO BUSINESS, AND ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Who? Escapist Comics is a comic bookstore, located at 3090 Claremont Ave., Berkeley, CA. 94705. EBay doesn't want us to post our email or phone information, but you can Google us or look us up in the phone book if you have questions or requests (want lists, for instance) that are too long or detailed to use the eBay messaging system for. We opened in March 2011, after buying out the stock and hiring the staff of the former legendary comics retailer Comic Relief. Our staff has many
decades of collective experience. Our principal grader has been collecting
comics since 1958, and selling them since the early 1970s. 100%
customer
satisfaction is guaranteed on all sales. If for any reason you're
unhappy with the service or the product you purchase, let us know and
we'll find a way to make it right. If a purchaser is dissatisfied
with condition, we will accept returns without question.
Grading:We use Overstreet Price Guide grading criteria and descriptive grades (e.g.
Fair, Good, Very Good, Fine, Very Fine, Near Mint, and their intermediate grades.) We do not use the numerical
grades popularized by the slabbing companies, which give the false
impression that grading comics is a science--so please don't ask us if
something is a "9.6" (or any other number), since as far as we're concerned, that's a
meaningless question.
Images:Images in these listings are scans of the actual books listed, not stock images.
Best Offers:We may be open to negotiation on prices on some items.
However, many of the items we list are on consignment, which limits our ability
to make deals in those cases. We're happy to entertain realistic Best Offers -- but please don't expect a counter-offer unless your initial offer is more than half of our asking price. Otherwise, it's simply a waste of your time and ours.
Pricing:Our
prices are based on the Overstreet Price Guide for regular comics, and
the Fogel Price Guide for undergrounds. We often depart from their
prices, but they're the baseline. Selling online is not our only avenue for this merchandise, and we're content to let it remain listed for months or even longer. While
bargains can often be found among our listings, we're not in the
discounting business--in general, we think that the Guide price for older books is usually fair and reasonable, and we often
offer prices lower than that anyway.
Unlike the practice at legitimate auction houses,
where the buyer pays fees as well as the seller doing so, sellers on eBay pay all of the system's expenses. eBay and PayPal between them take approximately
15% of what you pay us. We have no control or influence over these fees, which we consider to be too high. This,
from our point of view, means that simply by listing an item here, we are
already selling it at a discount, and by buying here, you're already getting a deal. Keep this in mind when asking for a lower price: we're already subsidizing your shopping.
Lots and Sets:Our
general pricing policy notwithstanding, we offer a number of lots and
sets of comics at drastically reduced prices. One reason their prices
are low is that selling this way involves less labor for us. Please
don't request separate scans or further information about individual issues in
these lots--if we were going to do that, we'd be asking more for them in
the first place. They're cheap largely because they're easy for us to
handle the way we do--us doing more labor necessarily equals you paying more money. Communication:Internet
sales are important to us, but we are primarily a physical bookstore,
and we work roughly 11 am to 5:30 pm Pacific time. You
may hear from us at other hours, but don't depend on it. Even though
the
store is open seven days a week, the people who do our online
sales don't work every day, especially on weekends. This
means that if you place a Best Offer on Friday evening, we may not see
it before it expires on Sunday (they really ought to last more
than two days.) We often answer inquiries immediately, but don't be
concerned if it takes up to three days, especially if a weekend
intervenes. Shipping:We usually ship once or twice a week. We will combine multiple purchases for one
shipping charge, even if you don’t ask Shipping will be by USPS Priority Mail, insurance included, unless other
arrangements are made. First Class Mail is also available. Signature required on delivery unless otherwise requested. If you ask us to use Media Mail, you do so at your risk, not ours. That means that if we use Media Mail at your request and it gets returned to us by the Post Office because comics are not eligible, you will pay twice for shipping, and it also means that you shouldn't complain about speed if this happens. We don't recommend Media Mail for comics, but we're happy to oblige if you ask. Allow 3-5 business
days (business days means not counting weekends) after we actually
receive the money in our bank account before shipping -- this can be a
week or more after you first make the payment.
International
customers should be aware that tracking is not available for their
shipments, and that it is not unusual for a package to take six weeks or
longer to reach an overseas customer. We ask that international customers not become concerned about the whereabouts of their shipments until at least that much time has passed. If that's a problem for you, perhaps we're not your best choice as a vendor.
Shortages:As I said above, we are an actual,
physical bookstore. All the items listed here, and hundreds of additional boxes of comics amounting to tens of thousands of items, are for sale in the
shop. People are looking through those boxes constantly. Occasionally books listed here may be either misfiled (usually by
customers who were examining them), or--less often--sold in the store
and inadvertently not deleted from eBay. If we are unable to fill your
order because of this (that is, if we've already sold a book, or if we can't find it), we'll issue an immediate refund with our
apologies, and offer you free shipping on your next US order.
Payment:Obviously, we accept PayPal. Ebay doesn't like us to mention specific other payment methods here, since it could cut into their PayPal profits (conflict of interest, anyone?), but other methods are available as well. Please inquire: whatever it is, we probably accept it.
Feedback:
Since eBay doesn't permit sellers to post negative feedback for buyers,
we consider posting any feedback at all for buyers to be pretty pointless (a buyer
with 100% positive feedback? Wow! Wait--there's no such thing as negative
feedback for buyers? Not so impressive.) So we only post feedback when a
buyer with whom we've had a good experience requests it. In that case
we're quite happy to do so (though we still don't get the point.) If we
haven't given you feedback, we don't dislike you, and we haven't
forgotten to do it either -- just ask and you shall receive.
If you have any complaints or problems with our products or service, we ask that you let us try to make it up to you before posting feedback.
We make mistakes like anyone else, but we try to correct them to our
customers' satisfaction. We have to know about a problem, though, before
we can fix it.
We encourage free store pickups (and in-store shopping, of course: all items
listed here are available in the store, along with tens of thousands of
others.)
Feel free to phone us with requests, or send messages: we
have tens of thousands of items for sale, many of which will eventually be
listed here, but if we know you’re looking for something and we can find it in our stock, we can post it sooner
on eBay for you to buy! Please drop by or call us any time!
