For models, Rockwell used his fellow Post illustrator Mead Schaeffer as the Tattoo artist and an Arlington,Vermont neighbor as the sailor. Ironically Decker did not have any tattoos at all. In the painting the last name on the arm was supposed to be Belle but the real Belle said that she would never speak to Rockwell again if she put her name in the painting.
As per usual, Rockwell used photos for establishing his composition.
For authenticity, Rockwell borrowed a tattoo machine from Al Neville who ran a Tattoo parlor in the Bowery.
