This painting was voted the favorite of all time by Post readers.

The models for the 2 young men sitting with the grandmother and the little boy are Jarvis Rockwell (Rockwell’s eldest son) sitting furthest away and Don Winslow (who later became Rockwell’s apprentice).

The model playing the old lady praying died before the picture was published. The photo sessions for the models were done in Rockwell’s Arlington studio with furniture borrowed from an automat in New York City.

The location for the painting was the Horn and Hardart Cafeteria on Juniper St. in Philadelphia.

Rockwell said about the painting “The people around them were staring, some surprised, some puzzled, some remembering their own lost childhood but all respectful”. (Rockwell’s italics)
