Description

Charles-Michel d’Irumberry de Salaberry’s group of Colonial regulars, the Voltigeurs Canadiens, was a light infantry unit that would become one of the most successful and well-known units to fight in the War of 1812.  Voltigeurs forced American troops to retreat, despite the fact that the Americans outnumbered the Voltigeurs and their Aboriginal allies by more than two to one.

Historical exagerations and legends arose around this epic battle, including the assertion that 300 Canadian allies had forced the retreat of 7,000 Americans.  However, despite the legend, the significance of the Battle of Châteauguay, and of de Salaberry’s role in, remain indisputable. The actions and heroism of de Salaberry and the Voltigeurs remain key moments in the War of 1812.

This coin makes an ideal gift for family and friends who enjoy Canadian and American history, military history, and especially events surrounding the War of 1812.

Design:

This coin was designed by Bonnie Ross and features, in the foreground, a three-quarter profile portrait of Charles-Michel de Salaberry set against an intricately engraved background comprised of the bilingual text “The War of 1812/La guerre de 1812.” This background is horizontally bisected by a polished silver band featuring the embossed word “de Salaberry” in cursive lettering. Beneath this band is the engraved and painted Government of Canada War of 1812 logo composed of the date “1812” in 1812-style handwritten lettering laid over a red stylized maple leaf with ecru swords crossing behind it. The reverse is also embossed with the face value of “4 DOLLARS.”

Packaging:

Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint branded maroon clamshell case lined with flock and protected by a customized “beauty box”.

Unsearched”All of the coins offered in this listing are “unsearched”.  Many coin dealers “search” all coins when they are received from the Mint.  They "cherry-pick" the best coins.  Then submit them to be graded, certified, and slabbed by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, etc.  These graded and certified coins are then sold at higher, premium prices.  When a dealer searches coins, those that they sell in original Mint packaging are only lesser quality coins.

Photos: When a listing offers multiples of the same coin, one coin is picked at random and photographed.  Since all coins offered in that listing are essentially identical, the coin photographed is representative of all coins offered.

Surface areas that appear black on some proof coin photos are actually highly polished, mirror-bright metal reflecting the color of the camera. We often include proof coin photos with the coin slightly tilted to better depict the mirror bright surfaces.  However, tilting the coin may resulting one side being slightly out of focus.

Our goal is to provide clear, high definition photos that accurately represent the coin(s) offered in each of our eBay listings.  Whenever possible, we use actual photos of our coins, rather than just stock artwork from the Mint.  We frequently update and upgrade the photos that appear with our listings, using improved cameras and lenses and better lighting.  We will honor your requests for additional photos as quickly as our schedule permits.
