The Encyclopedia Britannica Eleventh Edition (1910–1911) is a 29-volume reference work that marked the beginning of the Encyclopedia Britannica's transition from a British to an American publication. Some of its articles were written by the best-known scholars of the day. The articles are still of value and interest to modern scholars as cultural artifacts of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The 12th Edition was released as a 3 volume update to the 11th, as volumes 30, 31 and 32.  We are now including the 12th Edition on this disk at NO EXTRA CHARGE!!!

Britannica is the oldest English language encyclopedia that is still in print.  Originally published starting in 1768 in Edinburgh, it quickly grew in popularity and size.  The 3rd edition in 1801 reached 20 volumes.  The rising stature of Britannica helped recruit eminent scholars as contributors.  The 9th edition is regarded as a landmark encyclopedia for scholarship and literary style (also available from our store).

The 1911 eleventh edition was assembled under the leadership of American publisher Horace Everett Hooper, and edited by Hugh Chisholm. Originally, Hooper purchased the rights to the 25-volume ninth edition and persuaded the British newspaper The Times to issue its reprint, with eleven additional volumes (35 volumes total) as the tenth edition, which appeared in 1902. Hooper's association with The Times ceased in 1909, and he negotiated with the Cambridge University Press to publish the 29-volume eleventh edition.

This DVD ROM disk contains the entire 29 Volumes of the 11th, and the 3 additional volumes of the 12th, including the index volume, all in pdf format, over 30,000 pages total!  Stick it on your laptop, and have plenty of leisurely reading to do on your next plane ride!

This encyclopedia was first published about 100 years ago.  Print volumes are increasingly difficult to find.  And if you were to find one, expect to pay!  And then, do you really want to flip through the pages of a collector's encyclopedia and lower its value?  With this DVD rom disk, you can pop it in your laptop on a plane and read along as much as you like.  With 30,000 pages, I doubt you'll ever get to it all!  But, for those individuals looking to do research on the ideas and beliefs of the 19th and early 20th century, there is no better source than the 11th edition of the encyclopedia Britannica!

I know this goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway. To play DVD's, you need a DVD-ROM drive in your computer.  These DVD's will not play in your CD-ROM drive.  We are not responsible for your hardware problems if you purchase this disk without realizing you don't have a DVD-ROM drive!

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

I have to say it once again, this edition has each volume in its own PDF file, with each volume close to a thousand pages.  It is not in some sort of software format like all the new versions of Brittanica.  These are scanned pages combined into PDF files.  The last volume is the index.  It is a little pain in the butt to search through it and it can be a little difficult to read through all of it.  But, you can do a "find" in Acrobat and search for key words in a specific volume, and it will find them.  And finally, each volume is copy protected with our business name on it.  Also, the files are rather large in size, so I recommend at least 500 MB of RAM on your machine, but I strongly recommend at least 1 GB of RAM.  I recommend you move the files to your hard drive in order to read them, so keep all this in mind before you purchase.

All items are shipped by USPS first class mail.  In an effort to keep our costs down, that are passed along as low prices to you, all of our disks are packaged and shipped in economic sleeves and mailers.  All of our disks are labeled with a clean label and some graphics.  The disks are made this way for speed and cost, which translates into lower cost for you.  We focus our efforts on the quality of the material on the disk.  We do not believe in charging you an extra 3 or 4 dollars like some companies out there just to throw in a 25 cent plastic case and slap a color label on an item.  We believe you purchase for content, and ours is the best, although we still believe you will be pleased with the presentation.

PLEASE READ ABOUT SHIPPING TIMES:

The estimated delivery dates shown above are ebay's estimates, not ours.  Sometimes ebay's dates are completely unrealistic.  Every effort is made to get your item out the next day, but once it leaves us, we ask that you please understand that we do not guarantee delivery by any date, since the USPS does not give us a guarantee either.  Below is our estimates on what to expect:

USA CUSTOMERS:  Most times, your package will arrive in about 1 week after we ship them depending on where you are at.  However, lately the Post Office it seems has not been very cooperative with us and we've had a couple of customers wait a few days longer than that.  If the item does not arrive, please email us directly and let us know, and we will make it right.

NON-USA CUSTOMERS:  Same deal above,  except your packages typically have been taking about 2 weeks or so after we ship them.  We've noticed that maybe 20% of overseas customers have been waiting as long as 4+ weeks for these shipments.  The only explanation we can come up with is that it must be stuck in some container in some dock waiting on customs clearance.  It happens, and for those 20% of customers, we apologize, but there is very little we can do about that.  Your disk will arrive or we will replace it.

Multiple items purchased by the same customer may or may not be shipped in the same package, at our discretion.  We do not offer any additional discounts on multiple items other than the ones noted above.
